Copper Mountain (named after Vice President John C. Breckenridge, to curry favor for a Post Office) was established as a gold mining town in 1859, at an elevation of 9,600ft and is situated in the Colorado Rocky Mountains at the base of the Tenmile Mountain Range, which is named for it’s natural phenominum of 10 peaks running north to south, it’s peaks formed a mile apart from peak to peak. Breckenridge Ski Resort operates on peaks 6 thru 10, with Peak One located in the nearby town of Frisco, Colorado. Breckenridge is known for its ski resort, year-round alpine activities and Gold Rush history. The Victorian core of this former mining town is preserved as the Breckenridge National Historic District, running primarily along Main Street, with colorfully painted buildings from the 1880s.
